Introducing Captain Sanborn et al
"Gee, Cap'n," chirped Billings, the eager young recruit, "when are we going
to land on The Evil Planet of Drooxigorb?"
Captain Sanborn regarded the jubilant lad with mild amusement. "Be
patient, Billings. There will soon be more action than you ever dreamed of
when you were just a simple farmer boy on Ambledown-3."
Billings nodded, but couldn't contain his excitement. His strong desire
for action was infectious, noted the captain. That was good. The crew
needed a good boost in their morale before they encountered the forces of
Scardegga, the ruthless slave-trading kingpin of the Galafia.
"Planetfall in 10 minutes!" announced the astrogator, a wirey fellow named
Hans, who always looked as if he needed 7 more hours of sleep. "Standard
orbit plotted, sir!"
Sanborn was pleased with his crew. Very few were veterans, but if high
spirits could win a war, his men and women were bound for victory.
But he could not ignore the sobering fact that it was a near certainty that
many brave young crewpersons would never make it home to tell the tale...
Gosharootie! The first battle!
"Here we go again," mused Captain Sanborn. "More fuel for the never-ending
battle against the evil of the Galafia..."
The planet Drooxigorb was now in visual range. It sparkled deceptively
gem-like against the black velvet of space. Sanborn thumbed the intercom.
"All hands, stand by. We're going to have some fun, lads 'n' lasses!"
No sooner had he spoken than the radar operator (a young girl named Wilma,
barely old enough to join the Forces) shouted, "Incoming missiles, Sir!"
Galvanized to action, Sanborn leaped to the battle display globe. Grabbing
the intercom, he advised, "Look alive, people! We've got company!"
With mounting satisfaction, he observed the anti-missile blasters
vanquishing the fire-tipped angels of death that were threatening the ship.
"Well done!" he chortled, time and again, as his youthful but efficient
crew dealt with the onslaught.
And just as suddenly as the attack had begun, it ended. No more missiles
rose to blast them to interstellar dust.
"It's quiet, all of sudden," observed Hans.
"Quiet, yes," stated the Captain. "Maybe a bit TOO quiet..."
Utter Disaster Brings About the End.
Suddenly, the main engine blew up. All crewpersons were killed instantly.
The evil forces of the Galafia proceeded to take over the galaxy, and from
there, moved on to dominate the ENTIRE UNIVERSE!
This continued for some time. In fact, it continued until the universe
collapsed back into the primordial spark from which everything evolved.
The next time around, maybe the main engine won't blow up.
Of course, we'll never know, will we?
UNIVERSE!
This continued for some time. In fact, it continued until the universe
collapsed
